The darker blue is much more aesthetically pleasing and it does look similiar to old German flag which itself is better than current German flag.

I may not be French but I definitely like the darker color on the French flag more because it's not only much more pleasing or elegant to the eyes, it also has a rather amazing history behind it too!

"Hold a minute, ain't that the german empire flag?"
Until I realized it was france I though that Otto van bismarck went for a second round

Short answer: both are official.

Long answer: the lighter blue version is a thing meant for TV announcements because the dark blue looks like black in ancient color TV back in the 1960s-70s

This flag was last used pre-1974, not the French Revolution, and by president Valéry Giscard D’Estaing. It was supposedly changed to be more clear on color television reasons. Though it is most suggested that it also fit well as the same color of the EU flag (created 1955) and aided in symbolic rapprochement with NATO (same color as EU flag) and Europe. France left the NATO command structure and rejoined them in 2009.
