Australia’s wildfires are rapidly mutating into a more dangerous, hellish version of themselves. The New South Wales fires have now torched 27 million acres of land. And the wildfires are so intense they’ve managed to create their own violent weather systems — fire-generated thunderstorms.

If you have never seen the full size of one of these pyrocumulonimbus caused by a massive fire in person it seriously looks like a volcano erupting. I was unfortunate enough to see it 30 km south of Pedrogão Grande on the day 66 people died.
