Lyrics:
When the night wind softly blows through my open window
Then I start to remember the girl that brought me joy
Now the night wind softly blows sadness to tomorrow
Bringing tears to eyes so tired
Eyes I thought could cry no more

If the day would only come
Then you might just appear
even though you'd soon be gone
When I reached out my hand

If I could see you
If only I could see you
To see if you are laughing or crying
When the night winds softly blow

In my dark and whispering room
Memories still bring me a numbness to my feelings
Take my hand and brush my brow
In the warm and fevered dark
Heart is madly beating
My crazy thoughts are burning
When the night winds softly blow

If the day would only come
Then you might just appear
even though you'd soon be gone
When I reached out my hand

If I could see you
If only I could see you
To see if you are laughing or crying
When the night winds softly blow

If the day would only come
Then you might just appear
even though you'd soon be gone
When I reached out my hand

If I could see you
If only I could see you
To see if you are laughing or crying
When the night winds softly blow

The Rod Evans/Nick Simper Deep Purple was so beautiful, artful, just had a different feeling, Deep Purple went on to incredible greatness of course with the various subsquent lineups but the early Purple was rock baroque at times to me. This piece of music was simply a masterpiece!

The time of my life- I had just turned 16, was in blinding turmoil- parents divorced, oldest of four kids, and we were all clinging to the music that spoke volumes for us while we dealt with a new found level of poverty. I was an aspiring keyboard player with genetic talent- I played by ear naturally. I grew up playing a Howard baby grand that was my grandmother's, and first learned Deep Purple on that. Then I moved out of the house and got a Yamaha Electone, and had to learn that most electronic keyboards had no weight to the keys, something I had depended upon for timing with a piano. New learning experience! Jon Lord was my keyboard idol. To learn the keyboard lines by ear, I would play my record at speed 16 bar by bar, and transpose the key. This was my introduction to classical music...through classically trained Deep Purple!

It was 1972(?), my mom her best female friend(a spinster, but both were devout Catholics), heard this song while in AM radio range at a lake near Boise! My mom actually liked Anthem! RIP, Mom.

This song is't one the most beloved and popular Deep Purple song's in mi country. It's hard believe for us like an underrated tune.

Deep Purple are predominately known for their rocking prowess, but they created such a beautiful song here. Listen to the violin interlude at 3:20. This is so classy and unique yet so underrated. Most Deep Purple fans don't even know that this band created songs of this magnitude.

I also love the classical interlude of Renaissance in the early Deep Purple. Pure genius.
