Armed woman breaks into Beirut bank demanding her savings

A brief hostage situation has taken place at a bank in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, when a woman and her associates took hostages at gunpoint to demand her frozen deposits and pay for her ill sister’s medical treatment, local media have reported.
According to local sources, the woman managed to withdraw more than $13,000 in cash from her own account in Wednesday’s incident.
Lebanon's banks have locked most depositors out of their savings since a financial crisis took hold three years ago, leaving much of the population unable to pay for basic needs, and the government has so far failed to address the crisis.

Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr joins us from Beirut for the latest updates.

I mean, can't be too mad at her. It's not like she robbed the bank...she just wanted what was hers 👀

Desperate times, desperate measures. It's ridiculous if the people can't access their own savings. If the banks don't have enough cash balance at all times, then the public will lose trust in them.

After the high-profile case of the man who robbed a bank to access his own funds so he could pay for his dad’s operation, it was only a matter of time before a copycat emerged.

The same thing was done in Greece in 2008 and in Cyprus in 2013 but it was much worse.

Lebanon is the textbook example of the maximum individual and collective productive capacity of the people in money terms when their money reflects a true money value and not a Ponzi scheme of circulation of corporate growth of the leading country/countries of a common currency and political grouping of countries- through the vehicle of their common currency
