They need to step their game up, don't use a 5D mk 3 for a webcam, instead get a RED epic, and a SDI capture card and use that for a webcam, and then get the Master Zoom 16.5 - 110 lens from Zeiss.
It will easily beat your average USB 2 webcam, and be perfect for skype, as the people who you are conferencing with will appreciate that you took your skyping seriously enough to spend over $100, 000 on a camera, capture equipment, and a lens.

Hi Friends, I don't think its nice to shoot at her or CNET for trying to give a solution to people. I think this video can help people that already have a dslr camera, as the description states (Lexy Savvides shows you a simple way to turn "YOUR CANON OR NIKON DSLR" into a PC webcam), because if you don't have a camera already, it will be more expensive to buy a camera, rather buy an external webcam. She also mentioned in video "i am going to show you how to use your dslr camera", not "buy a camera". I apologize on behalf of Lexy Savvides and CNET if this created a confusion. For solution: i would advise if you dont have a camera already, "buy an external webcam". And that will be more cheaper...

The video was helpful.
Thanks Lexy Savvides (CNET)

This seems like a clever idea especially if your are traveling but then again there are very few tablets let alone laptops that don't have some sort of a webcam. Also, is this just for Canon and Nikon? I run a mirror less setup, so I am feeling rather left out.

"If your webcam is broken, don't panic! Because you can buy a $1000 DSLR and use that instead" LMAO

Reading the comments in here, I trie digiCamControl, a freeware, and it did the job for Facebook Like. You'll still either need OBS Studio or XSplit Broadcaster to broadcast because it doesn't create a virtual webcam like SparkoCam does. Also give yourself about 90 mins for your learning curve on software usage, since you must learn at least two programs. For example, you'll need to click the Lv (Live View) button in order to get it into video mode, THEN go to XSplit/OBS to see your live stream. However, you save $50-$70 and digiCamControl doesn't disappoint with it's fine tuning still photo controls.

SparcoCam is POS.
It doesn't cost 30UD, but 50USD for the basic version.
For just a bit more you can buy HDMI capture card or USB device.
The quality from HDMI grabber is an order of magnitude better than using the SparcoCam.
If you're using DSLR as a webcam, I guess quality matters for you, right.

Does this make sense as a permanent solution in order to make great quality videos, or will a webcam do the job just fine?

A 5DmkIII is probably much more expensive than that computer...

you say you can't use the camera's onboard mic...
can use an external mic that feeds straight into your camera? or does it have to be a mic that feeds into your cpu?

Pretty cool.
I've always wanted to use my DSLR as a webcam, so I could take pictures of myself, and maybe videochat once in awhile.
Also, is there any way to use my LG cellphone as a PC Webcam?

Actually, the software, SparkoCam, is now $50-70 a/o May 2018. Spending $50-$70 on a higher end webcam may be a better option at that point.
