As an African this event is very familiar to me, and its very concerning. American democracy has been the benchmark for many African governments where the rule of law is not only obeyed but enforced in earnest. Political instability breeds discontent, which in turn becomes animosity towards those who hold a different opinion. And before long, those suppressed biases start cropping up( racism, religious intolerance, gender biases, etc). I feel that its time for everyone to chip in and have a discussion on how we can fix the issues with this concept of "Democracy". We need to rethink about what it means to be democratic or to be in a democracy. We've had democracy for thousands of years and its not going away any time soon but if we don't fix the giant holes in this ship, a lot of us are going to drown.
