GMRS Antenna Comparison - Ghost vs Whip

In this video we do a real world GMRS antenna comparison using a 3dB ghost antenna and a 5.6dBi whip antenna. Testing and comparing General Mobile Radio Service radios and antennas is a great way to find out what works best in your area. The GMRS radios we are using are made by Midland Radio and TID Radio. I have both the mxta25 and the mxta26. I’m pleased w the performance. Height and ferrite rods and of course a Toroid helps w static and distance. Very addicting hobby. I like testing my equipment around town too. Cheers.

Height is might. I'm using a ghost antenna on Bullet Proof Diesel's third brake light mount on my Ford F-150 and it's performance is surprisingly good for everyday local use in Phoenix. For traveling with our camper, I sometimes switch to a 1/4 wave antenna for better range on the highway. I'd bet a ghost antenna on a mag mount on the roof would perform better than your whip antenna mounted on the fender next to the A-pillar. The roof mounted ghost antenna would have a better radiation pattern around the vehicle for transmission/reception compared to the directional pattern mounted on the fender. Good experiment and test! I have a 2025 4Runner and the Calie Rays ditch light mount from the video it looks to be the same set up as yours. I am using the 50watt midland radio. When I ordered all my gear I also ordered the midland ghost and the same whip antenna. My problem is my SWR on the ghost is 3.0 and the whip is 1.5. I contacted midland to see if it was safe to run the radio with a 3.0 SWR they would not say yes or no they just sent me another ghost antenna. It too is measuring 3.0 SWR. Our you getting better then 3.0 SWR reading with your ghost antenna?

Did you notice if the cars A pillar affected Ghost antennas receive and transmit quality when the person you were talking with was miles behind you? I am considering the Ghost antenna for a vacation road trip. I like how unobtrusive it is. Great video. Can’t wait to see what repeater setup you decide on.

Wait a minute, your friend with the hand held radio was sitting inside a vehicle for the first part of the test. Doesn’t being inside a vehicle greatly affected his ability to penetrate. I hope you repeat the test with him on the ground.
