Mastering Thumbnail Sketching for Beginners

Thumbnail sketching is the most important skill any concept artist can possess because it's the very first stage of ideation. Without good ideas, projects will fail. In this video, I give a very simple approach to thumbnail sketching.

Drawing is a skill that most people wish they could do but they immediately put themselves in the category of "Oh, I could never do that." I want to take this time and welcome you to my channel: Draw Sessions.

I've been drawing all my life and have had the privilege of working both for AAA game studios and also movies. I have taught foundation drawing at the University of Cincinnati and it's time now to give back. I understand the frustrations of learning art in general but specifically, drawing. My channel is dedicated in helping absolute beginners, intermediate artists, and industry veterans - all wanting to improve their drawing skills. One of the things that delights me the most about art is that we can have the same prompt, but end up with completely different things. Even to the point of your thumbnails. You were describing some things you saw and I didn't see it at all, I was seeing something entirely different. Then as you were refining, I was still so stuck on what I had seen, that I just didn't see your creature for who they were until they popped out all at once. Very fun video to watch, thank you!

I always learn something, or at least am inspired, when I watch these "beginner" tutorials. I'm a veteran concept artist, and can confirm, this is the mindset. However, each artist's approach varies, and that's the magic for me- seeing how someone who's like-brained executes ideas. I'm just gonna say that your thumbnails method is so liberating... It frees you from perfection and let you just draw whatever comes to your mind... I love this way of creating creatures and characters and I added it to my sketchbook exercises and I love the characters and creatures that I come up with...

It's funny how you say this is for concept/creature art, but I find this fun to do for my character sketches. Using pencil and ballpoint and the scribbling method here is tons of fun and helps me finalize an idea when needed.
