Dr. Walter Benning, an abortion provider, is killed in church.

From "Dignity" (Season 20, Episode 5): When Dr. Walter Benning (Guest Star Matthew Boston) is killed in church, Detectives Lupo (Jeremy Sisto) and Bernard (Anthony Anderson) arrive at the scene and are informed a white male was seen fleeing in a dark sedan. The minister (Guest Star Michael Hollick) tells the detectives that Dr. Benning was a late-term abortion doctor and had been shot at before and threatened many times; and his wife, Phyllis Benning (Guest Star Tracy Sallows), is convinced it is a pro-life zealot who is responsible.

Show Synopsis: In the criminal justice system, the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: the police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders. These are their stories. From Emmy-winning creator Dick Wolf, with its groundbreaking "ripped-from-the-headlines" format, comes the highly-acclaimed, longest-running crime series in television history.

Anti-abortion but willing to end someone's life. I love the irony

Poor choice of words father.

You know what reduces abortions: good sexual education, free contraception, free or cheap or understanding pre and postal natal care with good child support. Being ‘pro-life’ without supporting the above is stupid.

We had a case in the Buffalo, New York area where an abortion provider was murdered in his own home by a virulent anti-abortion activist. Personally, I would never have an abortion, but I would never force it on anybody else.

Regardless of motivations, I’m pretty sure that murdering another human being in the middle of a sermon literally seconds after the priest says peace be upon you is about the most unchristian thing this guy could have conceivably done.

Okay, but the baby's case of Ehler's Danlos Syndrome must have been one of the more rare, severe kinds because I have EDS and the only thing I have to worry about is making sure I go to bed with pillows supporting my arms, if I don't, I run the possibility of waking up with my arms dislocated from their socket. I've had to reset my shoulder a few times, myself.
On the other hand, I know of a girl who was wheelchair bound, not because she couldn't walk, but because her neck could slip out of place, internally decapitaing her.

This episode is based off the real-life case of Dr. George Tiller, who was a women's health care provider that was murdered in church in May of 2009.

I am pro-choice, but I was incredibly uncomfortable about the idea of 3rd trimester abortion (that genuinely disturbs me), heck even the second trimester seems too far along… that being said: when I heard that the woman’s baby had a condition that would cause them to go through a great deal of pain and have a high risk of death… I can understand wanting an abortion. As disturbing as a 3rd trimester abortion seems to me, letting a child go through that kind of suffering seems far worse to me.
I wish pro-life people could be brought in front of babies that had no choice but to be born with horrible conditions, just so they can see what “pro-life” can sometimes look like.

I would like to point out that when someone has a 3rd trimester abortion it's normally because they wanted the baby, but for some reason birth would not be the best choice for the mother and/or the baby. One example is the baby and/or mother may die during or soon after birth and a c-section would not be a good substitute for natural birth.

This has to be based off George Tiller, A Wichita Ks based doctor who specialized in late term abortions. He was shot through the eye when leaving church one day. I’ll never forget that day

I love the small amount of extra characterization we see from the Pastor in this moment. When the gunshot rings out he may duck, but then he runs straight toward the sound.

Saved his grandsons life? All three seconds of it being filled with incredible pain and discomfort, forced onto a mother that admitted she wouldnt be able to help the child?

It's amazing how many people are willing to misuse their beliefs to justify killing someone they don't like and feeling righteously indignant about it. I guess it never occurs to them to maybe not be so selfishly childish and think that their beliefs are the only ones that matter or should be used to create society. As if none of our beliefs mean anything and that they can just ignore us and what we think about it. If you're against abortion then don't get one, but that's where your rights and privileges end, everyone else is free to do as we please with our bodies thanks.

1st that baby would be born in agony and die soon after birth in all likelihood if the baby survives birth.3rd term abortions only happen in extreme circumstances. You would not leave even a dog or cat in such agony. But it's okay to do that to an infant? This is a tough medical choice and should be between the parents and a doctor.
