The Cure - High (higher mix)

The Cure had completely passed me by for years.

The only thing I knew of them, and even that was vaguely, was The Lovecats, and only then because it was on the first NOW album and I didn’t even own that. It was played round friends houses.

But then a few things started to happen.

The first was the single “Never Enough” which I remember hearing on the radio, and then I went out with someone who adored the Cure (and Robert Smith).

In time honoured tradition we exchanged cassettes of music we liked (such was the ritual at that time) and I got to listen to “Disintegration”, but at the time it didn’t do anything for me. In fact, I used to fall asleep to Plainsong!

But then they were presented with the BRIT Award. I remember Roger Daltrey remarking he dreaded presenting the award to a drum machine and a trumpet and was relieved to be presenting it to the Cure (or The KOOAAARRGH as he called them).
I paid attention.

Not long after they released “High” as the lead single from their forthcoming album “Wish” and I bought the remix on 12”.

What followed was a journey through their back catalogue that was an intense experience and changed my perceptions in ways I never thought possible at the time.

Listening to this track, and that synth spiral you can hear throughout, would be the sound of me falling through that rabbit hole and a new musical world flashing through my ears, eyes and brain.

This is where the Cure journey truly began.
