Your pointers make so much sense to us rec players over 40 years of age. We don’t need to try & play like the pros do in their double matches. We don’t have those skills or quick reaction levels. For us rec players, our success will be derived from consistency & not trying to overhit the ball. 👍

This is awesome. Applies also to most juniors too. They tend to have heavy topspin only and don't know how to do much else. I am asking my students to warm up in a continental grip and start close to the net, service line, 3/4, and baseline. Rally with the continental grip to get familiar with it in all parts of the court. Take the ball out of the air and get comfortable with service line volleys. It is the defensive grip when you are challenged deep (squash shots and defensive lobs), and the right thing to do when you are dragged into the net and have to fetch a low ball. And it can be a great tool mid court to place the ball at an angle with low bounce as you show here.

Hi Pete,
I have been following your advice in doubles:
Hit the ultimate rally ball
Use the continental grip on serve returns and short balls to angle it away low.
Push volley the overheads that are too hard, or just out of reach.
Working great!

Hi Pete, 40-year USPTA head pro here... I will be sending this to hundreds of my students who have heard EXACTLY ALL OF THIS from me, many times before. So this will serve as a great reminder for them. This is an awesome, concise compilation of THE MOST valuable doubles tips for rec players at all levels! Thank you for posting!

This is perhaps the best video on tennis I've seen! Pete - you are a genius when it comes to working with club level players. As for these 6 skills, I have encountered opponents too many times with some of these skills. While I may be able to outhit them in a rally, when it comes to playing them in competitive points, they dominate. I will now be able to refocus my tactics on the court. Thank you!!!

Great video! Going to watch it later with my partner. Side note my first tennis class ever in 1976 at Texas a&m was with an instructor who worked at the John newcomb tennis camp. I have had years playing and years off over my life and continue to love and study the game.

Regarding continental grip (the star of this video!)... I and many others find it hard to maintain a continental grip for forehand or backhand, especially if the ball is coming at you hard. It's like you have to have a very strong wrist. With the backhand, if you have your second hand on the racket, it's not so bad. What is your opinion of "cheating" especially on the forehand by moving somewhat towards an eastern grip. Is it important to hold perfectly the continental for both forehand and backhand? I can certainly appreciate it's hard to switch if you get a forehand volley followed quickly by a backhand volley. This would be an argument for keeping a continental grip!

can you list video links that demonstrate good volley, chip and continental lob techniques?

A consistent second serve to your opponent’s backhand. A set of tools that you can hit 50 in a row on the ball machine for each shot. And a strong sense of your close rate - how often does your risk taking result in your winning the point. Most players don’t even an approach 25%, let alone the 50% rate needed to make it statistically viable. That’s it.

Great video. Thank you. I chip a lot of second and even first serve return shots as a club 3.5 level player low to the backhand and get a lot of points. Like you said. Need to work on the volley using my shoulder and arms more as well as over heads between the net and service line as well as drop shots like you pointed out so well. 👌😊
