Henrico County Manager John Vithoulkas and Police Chief Eric English are pleading for greater vigilance from parents and families following a rise in incidents of students bringing guns to school.

They're urging gun owners to make sure that firearms are secured safely in their homes and kept away from curious children. In addition, parents are encouraged to monitor their children's social media and to look for potential warning signs. As a county, Henrico will continue to take steps to enhance school security by adding more cameras and weapon detection systems.

"We've got the physical improvements that are being made, but ... we, as parents, have to have an honest conversation about [how] we're all responsible for all of the kids in all of our schools," Vithoulkas says.
