For the bonus item: my English teacher in high school called that "the miniskirt rule." His definition was, "Long enough to cover the subject but still short enough to be interesting."

We started to try to get better at editing, adding all the cuts and jumps and trying to keep everything changing every few seconds and what I realized very quickly is that it wasn't sustainable. The videos performed well but they didn't perform well enough to justify the extra time spent editing when that time could have been spent planning the next video.

From a person suffering from Tiktok fatigue: Thank you for speaking up about this.

I like this video with very little editing. “Viewer fatigue” is a real thing and it’s awesome to see more videos going back to the basics. Thanks for this!

100k views on a short was like $16 for me. 100k on a long form video was like $400 or so (when I compared recently - and that was AFTER shorts monetized)
Personally I will incorporate shorts, but I'm still focusing on long form content because for me, that's what pays my bills... Not shorts..

“TikTokification” - I LOVE that! And I too am glad to bid it farewell. Bring on the “DeTikTokification” of our platforms, it’s well overdue! 👏

7:56 This is exactly the philosophy I run by. I don't plan out how long a video will be before I make it, I just decide what the video will contain, then make it, and however long it turns out is how long it is.

With an 11-year old in the house I've certainly seen the absurd attention-grabbing stuff that has become the norm. On our channel we try to keep it the classic real "guy with a camera" feel without fancy editing. We let our content direct our growth rather than fancy visuals. As a result the channel has grown slowly, but we also have REAL subscribers rather than thousands of folks that were wow'd by a single video and never came back.

When your small, you don't have authority and some times your being introduced to people for the first time. If your like me, your not a natural presenter who demands attention. So, When someone sees me they are like who are you? And nothing about the video entices them to stay. I was over producing. I'm guilty of it. But I realized it and stopped it. The reason why I did it was because I didn't want people to see me. I was stealing the value from the message. So instead I created videos with mostly b roll that is relevant to the video. The key was that I was trying to draw people in with the message instead. But I'm 2 years in now and have a little authority. I have return viewers and a small group of people have seen me enough to see that my content has a value they can use. That's why I backed off the over edited and over produced videos. I still use edits but I do so tastefully. To help amply the message and not fatigue my viewers. Great Video!

The only time ive heard a quote similar to that is Think Media. Something along the lines of "Make your content as short as possible but as long as necessary".

As a Content Creator, I pre-date YouTube. I started on LiveVideo. In the earliest days of YT, longer form, unedited vlog-type content reigned and YT thrived.

I completely agree! I don't edit shorts at all, they're short enough I don't find it neccessary. Long form is where the real information lies anyway. Thanks for your great insight!!

One thing I've noticed about my own over editing habits, is my tendency to stuff a video with memes at the expense of the clarity of my message. I'm trying to make it a rule that if I'm tempted to put a meme in the middle of a statement, unless it's gut bustingly funny or illustrates it's own point (which can't be placed somewhere else), I just cut it.

I am SO glad I watched this video. I am not only exhausting my viewers, I'm exhausting myself. I had a YT growth coach telling me I had to post 2-3x a day (shorts) and they had to be ridiculously edited and I was very close to just giving up entirely. I'm really glad to see this video and to feel like I have permission to do less but make it better. I'm going to record the first longer (non-short) video I've done in months, and get back to focusing on that. Thank you. I think I can breathe again!

Thank you for this. I always love this kind of content. The over-edited videos make me feel like being around a super hyper active person. I feel completely drained and exhausted afterwards :) I'm just starting my YouTube journey and I still have a lot to learn. I'm so glad you did this video. I don't feel as anxious about the "speed" of my content now. Not too sure if my content is any good YET, but I wanted to start my channel with being real and being me. I will never have the skill of professional editing but I am enjoying the process of learning. Thanks again:)

Really great point. When I started I thought I had to do these fast 10 minute videos, but I had so much more I wanted to cover so I just let the videos be as long as they needed to be and those videos have had way more reach I think in part because of that. It makes sense when I consider my own viewing preferences here on Youtube as well, since I love longer content. Like if I see something with an enticing enough title and thumbnail, and it's 2 hours long? Cancel my plans! I'm watching that video.

I do still enjoy playing around with editing, like doing a lot of sound design and fancy visual stuff to make boring old screen captures more interesting, but yeah sometimes it can feel a bit like putting lipstick on a pig.

We’re also getting tired of the rushed talking. The urgent speech pattern is exhausting to listen to/watch.

That is precisely my style, little editing, just honest, in your face chatting about issues regarding wheelchairs.

I've actually had a few people thank me for keeping some of my mistakes like mispronouncing or something. It helps give them confidence. 😃😃👋👋💖💖

I do walking travel videos so by default, there’s no over editing. Also, it’s a faceless channel with no voiceovers. I just add subtitles to give some useful info.
