On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a comprehensive partnership agreement, solidifying their countries' alliance and promising mutual aid in the event of aggression against either party.
"The comprehensive partnership agreement signed today includes, among other, mutual assistance in the event of aggression against one of the parties to this agreement," Russian President Vladimir Putin said.
The leaders expressed enthusiasm for this new level of alliance, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un saying, "Our two countries' relations have been elevated to a new, high level of alliance, laying the legal groundwork for the grand ideas of leadership of the two countries."
The deal, which the leaders said covered areas including security, trade, investment, and cultural and humanitarian ties, could mark the strongest connection between Moscow and Pyongyang since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.
