How to use a patchbay

Thanks for your lessons on the patchbays  Doug. So what is your opinion,  Do you think switchcraft is a better patchbay?  Is it a better built or does it provide higher sound quality than other patchbays? I have acquired a lot of out board equipment and I'm ready to start connecting but I was hesitating because I didn't want to reduce the sound quality with poor quality cables or patchbays. I guess when someone doesn't have a great quality signal to start with every bit of noise that is prevented should really matter. Right? I appreciate your advice on the patchbays and models. I only want to invest in a really good one if possible so that I don't have to change out later.  Thanks...

Doug Jenkins ! thanks for this. Would I be able to keep the patchbay 'normal' and still use outboard gear as inserts on on my DAW? Like running some recorded snare and kicks through a dbx 160a compressor then back into ProTools?

Mr.Doug - is there some way how to connect patchbay with interface Behringer UMC404HD? Should I use Playback outputs to patchbay and out of patchbay to Insert 1? Could you please help me ? Thanks

So if I have rack with 5 synth and one imput in my USB recording device, then i will have to physicly connect/disconnect cables everytime i wanna record different synth? Is there a way to summ those signals but no thru the mixer?

Still have a question after watching the vid.
I have 2 patchbays. Seems a lot like the one you were holding. Normal input jacks on the front and back. [32 front / 32 back] I can't find the little manual anywhere.

So, .... How do I know if it's normalled or half-normalled. Can I test this using mono jacks from a source?

I opened the thing up, to see if I could see any wiring so I could figure things out, but there's a print going from the front 2  to the back 2 and I can't see the print lay out cos then I have to damage the patchbay. Not a good idea :-)
