There’s a tad bit of misinformation here. The component you’re talking about is the “starter solenoid.” Also called the starter relay. The starter is the part that actually turns the motor over when you turn the key. The solenoid is the component between the key and the starter used to handle the large amount of current required by the starter. If your starter was actually bad, crossing the terminals on the solenoid would have no effect.
