Sticking: (R+K) l r L r L rlr L RLR L RLR L (R+K), played as straight 16th notes and 32nd notes. Starts on beat 1 in a bar and ends with one 16th note BEFORE beat 1 in the next bar.

The herta (RLR L) is one of my absolute favorite rudiments. The rudiment in itself is fairly simple - the first two strokes are played as 32nd notes, and the final two as 16th notes. Putting it into context can be a bit trickier, since a complete herta is 3/16 long, which makes it loop around in a polyrhythmic way when played in a 4/4 setting. Get the timing right and you can get some sweet chops rolling, such as this one! Good timing and understanding of time is crucial when using the herta in your playing. Good luck and have fun practicing!

For anyone interested, this is the mic setup I'm using:

AKG C 391 B a few inches underneath the hihat
Two Samson C01 mics placed behind me to my left and right, pointing in towards each side of the kit.

All mics are run through a Phonic 808 Firefly U audio interface, and hooked up via USB to my Asus laptop where the audio is recorded and processed in Cubase 7.
