I was tempted to get a travel set from LV awhile ago. The more I learned about leatherworking and the different kinds of canvas and leather that are used for bag making, the less interested I became. LV is coasting off of a brand name. And while I love the branding specifically, I don't like a lot of the materials. The best leather bags are unlined because fabric lining (even the mesh on the back panel of a bag) tends to unravel and break apart over time, turning the interior into an unsightly rat's nest of loose threads and loose fabric. Frank Clegg is something you might consider. He does high quality work despite being relatively obscure. He did have a bit of a boost to his brand when a president used a briefcase that he'd made.
Coach is one of the brands I'm alright with because of the price. If I can get 5-7 years out of it then I feel like I got my money's worth. LV better be heirloom quality for what they ask and unfortunately they just aren't. Gentleman's Gazette reviewed the Keep All weekender that LV makes and they weren't really impressed. The stitching was inconsistent, the fabric is PVC coated, and the brass looked to be plated. I still might get that travel set at some point, but I don't know. It's expensive and I'm unsure of how long it'll last. I think you did right getting stuff from Coach. If you have $2k+ to throw down on something, then Frank Clegg is probably a better alternative.
