Home Secretary Yvette Cooper claims the appointment of a former police chief to lead the new border security command is a sign that ministers are finally taking serious action on Channel crossings, unlike the "gimmicks" of the previous government.

However, Cooper avoided giving any clear timeline for when the number of arrivals might decrease, despite ongoing talks between Keir Starmer and Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, on migration.

When pressed about collaborating with Meloni's hard-right government, which has drawn criticism from rights groups and some Labour MPs, Cooper downplayed the concerns, saying the UK frequently works with governments of differing political views. On Sunday, Martin Hewitt, who led the enforcement of lockdown laws during the pandemic, was appointed commander of the new border security command.
