Rest Easy Maestro. Thank you for the wonderful music, especially this.

As far as I'm concerned this Sonata is one of the supreme achievements of late classical/ early romantic solo piano. The passage between 6:55 to 8:35 alone is so profoundly poetic that it almost moves me to tears, and the second movement evokes some kind of strange melancholy that's frankly hard to explain in words.
Schubert was a tremendous gift to the world (and Brendel is a master as always).

Brendel's style, technique and performance of Schubert might be the best ever, arguably.

I am no musical expert or scholar. I just love music and imho if such a thing could be possible, Alfred Brendel has inherited the soul and spirit of Schubert with this deeply beautiful and moving performance. Two great geniuses. Thanks so very much for this upload.

It is some kind of a miracle. How the deepest emotions can be cast in such a pristine beauty.

this sonata is one of the greatest if not the greatest achievements of human kind.

I have known this recording since I was a child but it stays a miracle. Brendel and Schubert, it’s a perfect match… Just the way he can repeat the same theme with so various little changes in shade every time it appears according to the place in the whole is astonishing and deeply touching. Thank you for ever, Alfred Brendel, this work and his interpretation are a milestone!

I can't say how much I love Schubert.
This performance and the one by Sviatoslav Richter are my favourite pieces of music.

In the 90's i was working in a book store. I fell in love with one of the cashier girls. She was partly chinese and would later become a Jazz singer with her own band. She already had a boyfriend who was a musician with a piano. I had nothing to offer except my confusion and insecurity. This Sonata was my only comfort during that time.

There will never be a pianist like Brendel. He is surely in at his best here.

The second movement. I'm melting. The austrian landscape. A funeral. A crucifix. Austrian priest in black. Farmers, with earth under their fingernails. Some sad, some crying, many having routine in funerals. Remembering the good things. Rough guys, not used to be in suites, carrying the coffin. Tips for them. Life goes on. And so does death. Happiness is like a dandelion. Quite, simple and beautiful. But the wind will come. Some still have to learn this. But most already know.

Ruhe in Frieden. Who couldn’t love Schubert after listening to Brendel?

I am listening for the same reason, remembering the great Alfred Brendel who died yesterday at the grand old age of 94. Poet, pianist and accidental humourist!
