Unfortunately apprentices do not become engineers unless they continue their studies at a university, they become aircraft fitters. I hear so many tradesmen say they are engineers when they are not. The time spent at university and the work load is mind boggling compared to an apprenticeship. I was a aircraft engine fitter back in the fifties and sixties, my son studied and became a mechanical engineer which to me was incredibly hard although I was able to help him for the first two years of his study but after that I was completely lost. Unfortunately the drop out rate at university was considerable due mostly to pressure I do believe. What happened to those that dropped out I often wonder. So I hope you can understand my objection to fitters being called engineers.
