Are there limits to solidarity? | George (Γιώργος) Tyrikos - Ergas (Τυρίκος - Εργάς) | TEDxLesvos

George Tyrikos - Ergas is an author and a founding member of "Agalia" (Hug), which is an NGO based on the island of Lesvos. Agalia has been helping refugees not only during the recent months that the flows are dramatically increased, but for several years. In TEDxLesvos George talked about their efforts and shared with us some stories of love and giving, their agony about the limits that have to overcome to be able to respond to the needs of the people arriving on the island.

Ο Γιώργος Τυρίκος – Εργάς είναι συγγραφέας και ιδρυτικό μέλος της «Αγκαλιάς» μιας ΜΚΟ με έδρα τη Λέσβο. Η «Αγκαλιά» έχει βοηθήσει και συνεχίζει να βοηθάει πολλούς πρόσφυγες, όχι μόνο τους τελευταίους μήνες που οι ροές έχουν αυξηθεί δραματικά, άλλα εδώ και αρκετά χρόνια. Στο TEDxLesvos ο Γιώργος μας μίλησε για τις προσπάθειες τους, μας μετέφερε ιστορίες αγάπης και μοιράστηκε μαζί μας την αγωνία για τα όρια, που ξεπεράστηκαν για να μπορέσουν να ανταποκριθούν στις ανάγκες των συνανθρώπων μας, που φθάνουν στο νησί.

George Tyrikos Ergas was born in Kalymnos. He is a PhD student in Folklore at University of Ioannina. He studied Classical Philology, Egyptian hieroglyphics, cuneiform and comparative literature in several universities such as University of Cyprus, University of Notre Dame (America), Sorbonne, Paris 1, Paris 3 (Paris). He was awarded a science fiction prize and he is a founding member of the NGO “Agkalia” in Kalloni, Lesvos. He is currently a Researcher Assistant in the University of Durham, Department of Anthropology contributing in an ESRC project related to the migration issue in the Mediterranean.
