A short visual tour of a rare SMF, #12/13 of the original run of NiTiNol blades.

60 NiTiNOL PM refers to a very rare metal produced by Crucible Metallurgy after a long and costly R&D process after first being developed by the Naval Ordinance Laboratory in the 1960s.

A ton of money was spent developing NiTiNOL into the "60 NiTiNOL PM" it has become now, and are exclusive to Strider Knives.

Due to the costs associated with manufacturing the steel and then the machining of the blades, only a small handful of these knives have been produced making them some of the rarest as they are the only knives made with this material in the world.

Done with a Canon 5DmkII with the 24-105mm lens and a 13mm macro extension tube

For more information on the material here are some links that provide some good information:

Some idea into the costs associated with making the alloy:

Hey - I know this is an old video, but I've been looking for someone who has one of these for a while - did you ever test its properties? How's its edge retention/how well does it sharpen?

@JohnFrumFromAmerica

I have cut plenty of things with the knife. The knife cuts very well. It is a thicker blade with a 3/4 slight hollow grind.

At 65rc the knife holds an edge extremely well

I take care of the guy that made these knifes and this material. He says that its indestructible and that there was no market for blades like this or razor blades because they would never have to be replaced due to its indestructibility. He has one but I haven't seen it however after hearing about this material I really wanna get my hands on one. He said they made a kitchen set out of it as well as bulles. Also its in all the Boeing planes O2 mask systems (according to him). Cool stuff!

@ericksonclayton thanks hopefully the material will come down in price one day and more knives will become available in this steel

While you are right with regard to the basic form of the NiTiNOL alloy. 60 NiTiNOL PM is a much more involved metal, resulting in the creation of a very very hard material that is also non-magnetic and non-corrosive.

I'll say again that I am no metallurgist though so keep that in mind.

It seems to me the safety release might be inadvertently pressed during handling - is that so?

What is the advantage of a knife made out of Nitinol? As I remember, Nitinol can gain its old shape by heating it, unless it is too much deformed or broken. But is it much harder than normal steel? I can't see, what makes this knife better than others.

People who collect knives are psychopaths!
There's nothing great about knives, you can 3d print a knife just like that
