I just do ricing until i feel comfortable enough in my own terms. I am a pen tester so I mainly use kali and i just love starting my vm and seeing something that makes my eyes happy

if you use the same thing all the time, people say you should change it up. If you're constantly changing it, people will tell you to settle for one and stop playing with it.

Ricing's not inherently a waste of time, no more than redecorating your house, buying a new tv or going for a walk just because you felt like a walk. None of those activities actually have any inherent purpose since you could get by without doing them.

If you enjoy it, it's worth your time. It's really that simple. When people tell you it's a waste of time, it's just an attempt to shame you into stopping, which is usually because they just like telling to you be like them. If they change stuff a lot, they'll expect others to do the same and will insult people who don't. Same in the reverse for people who stick to defaults and get annoyed when you like to change stuff.

Live your own life, not someone else's.

Just my two cents, I don’t rice myself, but how is ricing any different from art? I’ve seen all kinds of things which could be construed as a waste of time, such as Ichiban or which is flower arranging, home redesign for Feng Shui, or creating sculptures out of recycled materials. Only difference is that pricing seems to utilize digital material rather than physical medium. If it makes you happy, keep going.

That's why Window is the best OS ever ;) Once you've moved the task bar, changed the wallpaper and the colour scheme, that's it! You're done :)

Configuring layouts or system monitoring stuff has utility, beyond that its admittedly aesthetic. But there are things that can be learned through ricing depending on what you're doing. Maybe you learn what a wm or a compositor is, or you learn how X works. Maybe you even pick up some CSS or python, etc. So in actuality ricing for aesthetics could have a utilitarian purpose.

I wonder how many people that say ricing is a waste of time have a wallpaper? Wallpapers don't improve your work flow so why bother?

For me, I want the ricing, I want to make it my own.

If I had never done - successfully or otherwise- any ricing, I would never have seen or edited a config file. Isn't that a good reason to dabble with the look of your GUI?

Ricing in recreational activity with aesthetic outcome. The waste of time part is about how much time spent. You can rice and do proactive things. The main point is balance. Rice all you want!

I personally don't customize beyond what I need and generally don't think ricing is something I would want to invest my time in.

If you like ricing and it makes you happy that's good.

I do however roll my eyes at people who think ricing is the whole essence of using a FOSS OS and would look down on you for not ricing.

Ricing???? I had to look this up. I've never heard that term used before. Found out that's a term used in the Car Racing World. Could we go back to the old terms I've been accustomed to using the past 30 years... Skinning or Theme-ing.

Ricing is good IF you don't have to use the same non-rices OS on other peoples computers... and therefore good if your computer is the one you use must often. But continued ricing is a bit unnecessary and a waste of time..

I supposed you have to ask yourself, is there something else I should be doing instead of this? Only you can answer that question. It's like anything. If you have a wife and/or kids and you are spending more time ricing than you are with them; then maybe you have a problem. Anything can become addictive. Just look at the people that play video games all of the time. That can be a huge addiction. I don't do video games and don't even have "Steam" installed. But I know married couples who have gotten divorced because one or the other is addicted to playing video games.

I don't think ricing is a waste of time. Because exceptional skills are even more exceptional when you add beauty to them.

it may for some people ...but i just find myself enjoying configuring my PC just the way i want, even though i just switched to Linux like 2 month now
