“The Wendigo” by Algernon Blackwood is a classic horror novella first published in 1910. The story is set in the wilderness of Northwestern Ontario and follows a group of hunters on a moose-hunting trip. The main characters include two Scotsmen, Simpson and his uncle Dr Cathcart, along with their guides Hank Davis and Joseph Défago and an Indigenous cook named Punk.

During the trip, Simpson and Défago venture deeper into the forest, where Défago begins to sense a strange and fearful presence. One night, Défago runs into the wilderness, leaving Simpson to follow his tracks. Simpson discovers that Défago’s footprints have transformed into something non-human, and he hears Défago’s voice calling out in terror from the sky.

The story explores themes of isolation, the supernatural, and the primal fears that lie within humans. The Wendigo, a mythical creature from Algonquian folklore, is depicted as a malevolent force that preys on the hunters, driving them to madness and despair.

Story narrated by Chris Halton.

Probably Blackwood's best (non-John Silence) story.
However, I haven't read *all* of Blackwood's work, so if anyone has a suggestion for the Blackwood story that tops this one, I'd love to hear it!
Thanks for having class and style, sir.
