The prize used to be better than that, Madrid was awarded the original trophy for winning it 5 times. Then UEFA made a new rule where if you won the European Cup 5 times or 3 times in a row they would give you the actual trophy.

Ajax became the first team to get the trophy for winning 3 times in a row and Bayern did the same right after them.

Finally, not that long ago they decided to stop giving away the trophy and switched to badges. Since they used to make an entire new trophy with a new design each time they gave it away I think the ''big ears'' trophy is now too iconic and they didn't want to give it away.
