I support Trump but not on this topic.. tariff makes prices go higher, PERIOD. Factories might move to the US to avoid tariff but the resulting product will cost a lot more. But it will create jobs in America.. but that's an awfully expensive way to create jobs..

The main control of inflation is the national debt. If the government can spend less than current revenues and pay off more of the national debt then inflation will decrease, Other controls that affect supply and demand are fine controls. If you can increase supply and/or decrease demand then prices will decrease. If you use tariffs to decrease demand because it promotes local employment then this is one option. A more important option is to increase supply by lowering energy prices. By increasing production of oil and making gas cheaper then the cost of transporting goods to market will decrease. The pressure to make things affordable will increase.

“Consumer prices will always go up by any reasonable analysis of tariffs."

In fact, some of Trump’s earlier tariffs led domestic producers to hike their prices. In 2018, Trump slapped tariffs ranging from 20% to 50% on many residential washing machines from South Korea, leading Seoul-based LG to raise its prices in response. But so did the brand’s American competitors, as the newly pricier foreign models juiced demand for U.S.-made products.

Reviewing the price data, University of Chicago researchers later found “no clear distinction between domestic and foreign brands in these results, all within a range of 5 and 17 percent” — and dryers, which weren’t subject to tariffs but are often purchased alongside washers, saw price hikes as well.

So, as an American consumer, tariffs ensure nothing is affordable. I don't see how that helps anybody. The domestic producer is too expensive, and their price inflates because they don't have to compete anymore. The foreign producer sees a 100%- 200% tariff and decides to forgo the American market because it's no longer profitable. It sounds like a lose-lose-lose for everyone. No one sells anything, and the consumer can't afford anything.

The tariffs are used as leverage in order to negotiate better trade deals. Why is this concept so difficult for the mockingbirds to comprehend?

“I want them to earn a wage that can support an American family”. JD Vance.
“Will you agree to raise the minimum wage above the current $7.25?” HELL NO!

The main purpose of tarriffs is to give some reasons to buy American made products.

It’s amazing how sound the logic is and people pretend it’s going to be a problem. tarrifs were 30% or higher before the mid 1960’s and income tax was less than 3%. Americans bought houses out of high school. Then in the mid 60’s, it switched and Americans became poorer, the middle class completely died, few have purchasing power, and all decent paying blue collar jobs got sent overseas. But “economists” claim going back to what historically worked would be a good thing.

General Electric can be blamed for the trend of moving American jobs overseas to have slave labor instead of paying American workers. Others followed suit and they bought the government’s buy-in.

We need to go back.

Tariffs are a tax paid by the consumer. That is an undeniable economic reality. You can still use them to create certain incentives, but don't gaslight people.

Any tariffs on imported goods would have to be paid by the buyer (grocery chain, manufacturing plant, etc) which then marks up the price for those goods, and the consumer will have to contend with either paying a higher price for the foreign good or choose the domestic equivalent for a cheaper price. If those foreign goods don't sell then the buyer will eventually stop ordering future shipments. The fear of US consumers shying away from buying foreign goods could be what makes tariffs an effective negotiation strategy with other countries - I can't think of any other way for that rhetoric to make sense. I suppose these are the real consequences of putting American interests first, and so this is a chance for domestic companies to step up and raise the quality bar on their products.

Great response, but do you think that the guy who asked the question understood the facts being given to him?

It’s an incentive for international companies to bring their production and manufacturing to the US instead of using inhumane cheap labor in poor countries. And it’s also an opportunity for American companies to grab market share from foreign countries.

Sounds reasonable to me. Simply, how could outsourcing value to other countries be longterm good for our people?

Maybe it is good to outsource when our people are sitting on wealth and want to spend cheaply. But our economy is currently weak! We need value to flow domestically.
