I was a percussionist in an all-white band in the mid-80s. However, my very first year in band, our long-time band director left for a “better school”, and our new band director was black. Being brand new to marching band and to high school in general, I didn’t really care either way. I didn’t yet grasp the implications of how our “style” would change.

Our new director must’ve taken one look at his new, lily-white bunch of band geeks —- with their trumpets and trombones and clarinets —- and realized that very few of us had any natural rhythm. Outside of the drill team, NONE of the band could dance, either. He must’ve thought, “Oh my Lord, what have I gotten myself into?”

But he didn’t care, nor did he “dumb down” his instructional style to make our moves easier to do. He just taught us as though we had the skill and talent of Bethune-Cookman or FAMU or Morehouse.

And we LOVED IT! By the time I became Drum Major a couple years later, I was strutting around like I OWNED the place, and I could arch backwards like I was doing the limbo.
