I'm a huge reverse tea snob, I have many kinds of loose leaf and even make my own blends, but my absolute favorite tea is the cheapest earl grey from the supermarket, so I can totally imagine this being a thing.

As a tea snob i can honestly say buy what you can afford. Tea is amazing and price is usually an indicator of who got first pick of the freshest tea. Lipton is the same as more expensive brands, its just the leftovers. But yeah if you cant taste the difference then it either means youre not the snob you think you are or the product is not worth what its marketed as.

I like what I like. I make no claims that it's THE BEST thing ever. My mother used to do that and it drove me nuts.

I keep several teas on hand. Our female relatives are elderly and like hot tea or iced tea. I find if I have a selection no one is left out. I use Twinings brand. They have a good Chai.

I admit I'm a bit of a tea snob too 😅
I absolutely hate supermarket tea - depending also on which supermarket٫ I do have to admit that tea is damn expensive

My mom switched my grandma's "Dalem" cigarettes for "Doreal" instead and grandma never knew the difference! For context, Salem's were $6.50/pack and Doreal were $3.40 per pack. Mom would put doreals 8n a Salem pack and pocket the 3 dollars! My grandma never did catch on. Mom did the same thing about cereal, swapping Kelloggs for cheaper cereal flakes!

Oh god my dad was a snob with everything. He couldn’t even set foot in any store that wasn’t expensive on purpose. I asked to meet him in a Wetherspoons once, and he was astounded by how shitfaced one could get with £20-£30. For reference he would get pints that were £5-£10 a glass, and Wetherspoons had Bells and any mixer for £1.79. Pints were no more expensive than £2.50 unless you wanted something special (my local one has local brewery stock sometimes from all over Kent that are usually priced a little higher because they’re small batches and it’s a small business).

The most common argument I got was “well they must just water it down then”. 1. The shelf life of any alcohol goes down when water is added to it. Unless you’re using sterile boiled water and reseal the container, it’s not going to be good in a day or two.
2. I see them make measures using a standard cocktail measure.
3. Most of their mixers come from cans or bottles, not from taps.

Wetherspoons is the only place I know now that works on the business model of “the cheaper it is, the more people will buy”. Instead of buying one £6 drink and leaving, someone would buy two of the same drink for £3.50 and you’ve made £1 on that one sale. They’re still getting mark up for serving a vodka and coke for £3.50 of at least £2, and then you also keep them for more rounds due to the psychological effect of “ah it’s only £3.50”. You probably make the same amount off of those two drinks as the £6 drink makes, however, the fact that you’ve hooked them in with the idea of it being so much cheaper means they’re willing to spend more on your establishment to get more out of your establishment. They’re willing to stay longer and spend more because it’s so much cheaper for the same amount of drinks than anywhere else, which makes people feel like they get their money worth.

Barry's Tea is my first choice. Best brand on the Irish market. Will drink other brands, but as i drink about 15 mugs tea per day, Barry's is my happy place. ❤

I like that earl gray tea that they have in the little teabags at hotels, I remember one time I took a TONN of them from a hotel, and I still have many to this day, that I drink every once in a while, I love earl gray

As a tea snob, i actually prefer cheaper teas most times. Aometimes though, i do import an expensive box of tea just because some of it is amazing.

I can absolutely taste the difference between different kinds and makes of tea.

And my preferred (black) tea is yorkshire gold, though there's nothing wrong with a cup of tetley's or PG tips.

personally i like earl grey. i like the bergamot. i am not picky on brands. I sometimes add the extract directly for a boost. if you have bulk loose leaf teas and a bunch of different essential oils, you could probably make any tea from scratch. could be cheaper by pound in some cases. if you have room to grow a tree, could be efficient that way too. if you don't have access to certain ingredients, you could always go local and develop your own local flavors with herbs and fruits found locally with a base loose tea leaf.
you could find a bunch of random citrus fruits and try to experiment to make a replica. grapefruit, oranges, lemons, limes, tangerines should all be available in any super market. save the rinds and experiment. maybe you will find a blend of citrus and black tea that would really be better than anything ever before.

I'd 100% tell him. He might learn something, and he could finally make tea at home the way OP makes it.😂

He couldn't buy his own fancy schmancy tea? I wouldn't expect my SO to buy me the tea I like unless it was as a gift.

My mom actually did the same thing to my dad, just not with tea. It was way dumber, because my dad "could tell when it wasn't San Pellegrino water". She just kept an empty bottle and filled it with supermarket stuff.
