Bottom line for the teens, always be a disciplined driver on the road.

The more points, the better the score!

In NJ you can plea with the prosecutor to a lesser offense. It costs you 500 or so more dollars but it usually gets the points taken off. You can do it twice within five years.

The uk has a law that if a new driver get 6 points on their drivers license within 2 years of passing their test then they lose their license and have to retake the driving test to get it reinstated. I know a guy who had to do this twice. Once for speeding the second for driving w/ no insurance

I once worked for the state and was required to attend a full day drivers class to be able to drive state 🚗vehicles. Which is somewhat funny because I was hired to fly helicopters 🚁 firefighting.

The course was taught by a comedian and was both entertaining and informative. They had actually changed some laws since my high school drivers ed classes, plus my auto insurance company gave me a discount on my premiums.

In the UK we get points on the licence as well, normally 6 points in a year means you have to do a mandatory safety course, and 12 points in a year means you lose your licence and need to retake a driving test, but for people that have held their liscence for less than 3 years, 6 points is already the point where you lose your licence.

Option 4, best option, hire a traffic attorney. They can get you off 8 out of 10 times. Worst case, you go to traffic school.

Here in the UK provisional license refers to what Americans would call a Learners Permit *but* if you’ve not yet held your full license (which you get following completion of a theory and practical test -which aren’t easy here either and 50% of people fail on the practical, and that’s those that got through the theory) for 2 years you can loose it by getting 6 points, instead of 12, and you’ll have to apply for a new license. If you’re disqualified it’s up to the judge whether you take the test again, and if so if the test will be extended and thus harder than the original or if it’ll just be a suspension, (I think) but if you get it revoked as a new full license holder then you automatically have to take your (normal length) test again that you could’ve easily spent £1000+ to pass.
If you get 12 points after 2 years you’ll also face the same consequences but some exceptions exist and it’s a disqualification rather than a revocation (I’m not a lawyer I don’t really know the difference).
To give you an idea…
Judges can generally impose 1-9 points for any offence, though they have to follow the sentencing guidelines set nationally so they don’t have as much leeway in sentencing as US judges.
On the spot fines issued by police carry 0-6 points…
0 points for not displaying a license plate correctly (with a fine), same for not paying tax on your car and most illegal parking
3 points for speeding, running a red light etc
6 points (and £200 fine!) for using a phone in any way while in the driving seat with some exceptions like while safely parked, while at a drive thru to pay, or in an emergency.
We have the highest penalty for phone use while driving in Europe jointly with the Netherlands.

And in Australia depending on the timing and severity of the offence it could mean immediate loss of license.

Factors such as:
* What level of license are you on?
* How fast you were going?
* How many passengers you have in the car?
* What time of the day it is?
* Whether you're under the influence of drugs or alcohol?
* Whether you've broken other laws also?
* Whether you have a criminal history?
* And my all time favourite of Whether it's holiday time or not because they double offence penalties in holiday times meaning a full license holder can then also lose their license in one go also!

You can go ten miles above any posted speed limit.

If cops ask "you know how fast you were going" just say "around the speed limit."
