Enjoyed your video. I've laid about 1, 000 CMU since I started trying to lean this craft a few years back for my yard wall and friends' projects; I'm 70 and always wanted to learn how to lay blocks and bricks. As you point up, the mortar is the key. A growing problem in the US is getting quality sand for any purpose. In CA where I live we've just about used all of ours up and we bring sand in from Utah and Wyoming. Most of us just end up using Specmix, but I'm convinced the way you're doing it beats anything I get in a bag. I'm gonna try your method and already found the Plasticizer on Amazon. Ignore the YouTube Experts and keep offering the rest of us good ideas.

This video is so good. I’m a welder by trade but it’s very satisfying watching proper matter mixing.

What's the plasticizer product name? Can't read the curled up sticker on the bottle.

That is one giant mixer buddy. Even with 16 shovelfuls of material it was like a little ball of mortar in that giant chasm of a mixer!

I was thinking of buying an electric mixer for DIY use. Are they fine if used in smaller batch mixing and taking my time?

After shovels of cement in would of added bit of water to let plasticizer mix through before adding sand after so u don’t get dumplings rolling around then be patient

sounds like you got some gravel along with your sand - We try very hard to keep our material clean and free of rock and dirt

Hi does anyone know if you can use this type of rotating drum mixer for stucco? Why do stucco mixers have paddles that rotate instead of the drum rotating?

I hope your mix is better than the camera work! Most of the footage is focussed on you. You don't actually say how much plasticizer to use nor show the consistency of the mix as you pour the water into the mixer. Some of those spades of sand going into the mixer looked well under weight. Sorry but gave up on this one.

I've tried to mix by hand to fill cracks in my ourdoor wall (not bricks), and it always seems too sloppy/ sandy / not creamy, so it slips off the trowel.
Maybe i undermixed or overmixed it?

Did you really mix it for 40mins or was that 40 seconds?

The febmix bit i was hoping to learn from but from your very useful comments and replies from your other videos regarding sand wetness, dry blocks, clamp or class b bricks, its a judgement call.
Ive done well so far by just reading the instructions on the tub!

Ive only done hand or liger board mixes but a mixer for half an hour is way more than i thought BUT when we did the Concrete block destruction tests the longer dryer mixes (then cured in water) were like iron!
Ive done a few single skin practice walls now using salvaged bricks where the mortar course is mirror smooth and stronger than the bricks! Practice practice.
The current crop of 'builders' in the north could do with your videos because i can drag my van vault key down their mortar and it goes 2-5mm deep!
They are builders. Not brickies!
(B.S artists more like!)
Do you have a video on pointing?
Repointing is an ARSE job! Is rhere an efficient fast way and just to see the skill involved would be very useful.
Cheers!

Sorry for daft question but I take it this is not sharp sand it's building sand?

Meant to gauge it with buckets be all colours

20 shovels to 1 bag! Simple math no way you can over mix it but you can definitely make it to wet

You should always gauge your mix with bucket so you always get right amount of cement and sand..for perfect mix then its same amount every time your not to old to learn young man also its same strength and colour every time, I've seen people big shovel of sand and not the same when putting cement in, so your getting different mix every time.
