I really enjoy this series, seeing the Soviet/Russian point of view... and it is very fair and even-handed, in general. I flew the F-15 in the 1980's in Germany and elsewhere. MiG's were a mysterious foe, little was known. The USA got their hands on a few, from the Middle East, and used them in the Nevada desert in a once-secret program that allowed us to engage them.

At my time there, the MiG-21 was the most advanced Soviet aircraft. They also had MiG-23 examples. The poor MiG-23 couldn't turn at all but was exceptionally fast and could accelerate like crazy. The MiG-21 was far more formidable; a really agile little jet, and for its day, quite exceptional. MiG and Sukhoi have produced some excellent aircraft, no doubt.

As an old American engineer I enjoyed seeing the views of the designers working at those old-school drafting tables. I bet their engineers were a lot like ours: organized, practical, quiet, conservative but creative - and a little boring to be around!

Always thought of the MiG-21 as sort of the AK-47 of fighters.

American documentaries are slanted to the American perspective. Russian documentaries are slanted to the Russian perspective. The truth is somewhere in the middle, with that said. As an aviation nerd I love watching documentaries from other countries because it helps me round out a true picture of aircraft development. With that said please post more, and maybe we can talk planes instead of politics. I get enough of that crap without it spilling into my favorite hobby! And for all you haters there are plenty of Russian & American planes that rule!

Very interesting documentary. This is a well done program, of course with some Soviet (Russian) bias, however I had to look up many of the claims in the program about Korea only to discover most were true. Never heard about this in US or World history. There ARE ALWAYS AT LEAST 3 SIDES TO EVERY STORY YOURS, MINE AND THE TRUTH. The older Su and Mig aircraft have always fascinated me. Thanks for the post! Spaciba, Danke, Palamiyaye, Merci.... We are all related.

I have always been in awe of the simplistic yet highly effective design of the Mig 15, 17 and 19. Hats off to the Russains for designing such an aircraft platform, that gave the Americans a troubling fight in the skies above Korea and Vietnam. They went up against american planes that were of the highest technological design and cost. Yet still managed to be a tough formidable opponent. Scoring alot of wins in these dog fights of the time.
This plane design is one of my favorite of any aircraft ever made. Btw very good narration.. He made it easy to understand from a western perspective..

This is a fantastic series. Interesting irony though - at 1:20 there is gun camera footage purportedly showing a MIG-15 shooting at a P-80. In reality, that footage is from an F-86 Sabre shooting down an MIG-15. The MIG-15 did not even have machine guns, instead utilizing a slower-firing cannon.

The 1000:335 Soviet vs. US kill ratio for the Korean War is somewhat misleading. The majority of sorties flown in support of North Korea were flown by North Korean and Chinese pilots whereas the majority of those flown in support of the South were flown by US pilots. Naturally the US would lose more planes than the Soviets simply because they flew thousands more sorties. The actual US pilot vs. Soviet pilot kill ratio was closer to 1:1.

Excelentes videos, se disfruta mucho ver algo desde el punto de vista de los rusos.

The problem of unrecoverable dives was not limited to Soviets. US fighters of day experienced. Compressibility approaching transonic air speed. Air could not get out of way fast enough and build up to such level that flight controls could not be deflected. P-38 had dive brakes to slow its speed.

Interesting concept of hybrid piston engine and compressed air jet propulsion model. Piston engine drives a turbine to compress air not for turbocharging, but for added thrust. Obviously inferior to military combat applications. But as light general civilian aviation it is interesting. I wonder if anyone in the West pursed this concept.

Little the people know that few Mig-17s served with Indonesian Airforce in early 60s and one of the Mig 17 pilot managed to strafe the Indonesian presidential palace for unknown reason, but Luckily no one was hurt.

Very interesting how many F-86s were lost in "training accidents".

Am I the only one who cranked up the volume a ton at the start thinkin it was just quiet, then have your ears and neighbours blasted when that heli and gun shots started when sound came back?

And then again around 4:00 when Audio improved once again lolz

Think of aerodynamic fence as sort of Berlin Wall. It prevents air from defecting from straight to angular flow.
