Rest in peace, Akira Toriyama. I cannot overstate how grateful I am for having been fortunate enough to have experienced your many artistic contributions to the world throughout my life.

When I was a younger dude, I used to come home from school every afternoon and play back a VHS recording of a show I became obsessed with.

It got to a point where (due to a younger sibling's unforeseen bout of nostalgia) my automated schedule accidentally recorded over a family home movie.

As I got older, this show became a worldwide phenomenon... to the point that VHS tapes of it started being sold for like $35 at stores... or on seedy CD-ROM "video discs" shared between other fellow fans...

Alas... since that time long ago this now worldwide phenomenon of an IP has taken on what I would call an entirely different "feel." Nothing wrong with things changing, but I worry that with time that indescribable "feel" to older things gets lost or looked down upon.

I can't help but prefer to remember this show the way I originally experienced it - when the only way to watch was either on random Saturday mornings at 5am, or weekdays on a new block of animated shows on Cartoon Network called "Toonami" that was hosted by "Moltar" - a villain character from Space Ghost sort of "co-opted / repurposed" to be the cartoon equivalent of an MTV "V.J." for animated shows instead of music videos.

This little mini-obsession video project is just my attempt to show other more modern fans the way I remembered this little show called "Dragon Ball Z" - accurate or not - as I watched it every day after school (and sometimes on random Saturdays around 5 am or so when it showed up on UPN... right before Samurai Pizza Cats).

Getting older is unironically appreciating the time capsule of old dub openings.

In the same year we lost Toriyama, we also lost Doc Harrison, the narrator for DBZ's earliest dubs.
