There's an assortment of shortened words and anal people online who rub me up the wrong way when it comes to describing resolutions.

I don't even use those buzzwords. I always refer to resolution as: 720p, 1080p, 1440p, 2160p.

4k = 8 or 8.3 megapixels

It doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be simple and universal.

4K (3820 x 2160) is called 4K because it has 4 times the amount of pixels as 1080p (1920 x 1080).

If you multiply 1920 and 1080 (to get the total amount of pixels on a 1080p display) you get 2, 073, 600
If you multiply 3820 and 2160 (to get the total amount of pixels on a 4K display), you get 8, 294, 400 which is exactly 4 times more than 2, 073, 600.

4K doesn't get its name because the width is close to 4000 pixels.

Like how we say 'ten eighty' for 1080p, I would be happy/fine with calling 4K, 'twenty one sixty'. We had 'seven twenty' and 'four eighty'. Lets keep some sort of consistency rather than bring in this 'K' thing because like you said 4K is closest number to four thousand is the width at 3840 what is 180 off the four thousand mark but then there is 8K who's width is 7680, 320 off!

'Twenty one sixty' should be the name

144p = Terrible Definition (TD)
240p = Bad Definition (BD)
360p = Poor Definition (PD)
480p = Low Definition (LD)
720p = Standard Definition (SD)
1080p = High Definition (HD)
1440p/2K = Good Definition (GD)
2160p/4K = Great Definition (GGD)

4K is used as a reference to it utilising 4 times as many pixels as FullHD. 4K being 3840x2160 equals 8, 294, 400. FullHD is 1920x1080 = 2, 073, 600, quadruple it to get the same result as 4K. You can thank me later.
