Chinese President Meets Belarusian WWII Veterans

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko met 15 Belarusian WWII veterans in Minsk on Monday and presented them medals in recognition of their contributions to the victory of the World Anti-Fascist War.
When Xi and Lukashenko walked into the meeting hall, the national anthems of the two countries were played.
Xi shook hands with the veterans aged from 88 to 95 and awarded medals to them.
Eleven of the 15 Belarusian veterans fought side by side with Chinese people against Japanese invaders during the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression in the 1930s and 1940s.
Xi said Belarus fired the first shot against the Fascist aggression among the former Soviet republics and the heroism of the Belarussians has won them worldwide praise and respect.
Noting that this year marks the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese people's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Xi said the Belarussian and Chinese people had forged a solid friendship with blood during the wartime.
The heroes and martyrs who fought for the final victory of the war and sacrificed their lives to safeguard world peace will live in the hearts of the peoples of the two countries, the Chinese president said.
China is willing to join hands with Belarus and other countries to safeguard the victory fruits of WWII as well as international justice.
Lukashenko said the peoples of the two countries established a brotherly friendship during the WWII and should further enhance their mutual trust now.
Belarus firmly supports China's commemorative activities to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese people against Japanese aggression, and the commemorations are held to remember the history, cherish the memories of martyrs and warn later generations that history cannot be distorted, he said.
The Chinese president also visited the Belarusian State Museum of the Great Patriotic War and attended a wreath-laying ceremony at the Victory Monument.
Belarus is the last stop of Xi's three-nation tour, which has already taken him to Kazakhstan and Russia. In Moscow, he attended commemorative events marking the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Great Patriotic War, Russia's term for WWII.
