Palmyra Atoll is located 1000 miles south of Hawaii and is roughly in the geographic centre of the Pacific Ocean. It is a Marine Sanctuary and part of the U.S Minor Outlying Islands National Monument. The only people living there are researchers invited by The Nature Conservancy or by the U.S Fish and wildlife Service.
Heavily engineered by the U.S prior to WW2 the natural atoll was dredged and islands created to aid aircraft landing and ship anchorage. Now Nature is slowly reclaiming this dynamic atoll. Man-made islands and causeways are eroding and the lagoon once dead is recovering where fresh ocean water can now circulate.
It’s designation as a National Marine Sanctuary is currently under discussion.
Filmed during November 2022 using the DJI Air 2S

Spent a half day there in 1984 while serving on a CG cutter out of Honolulu. It would have been nice to dive the reefs and explore it further, but I wasn't the captain then.

First, OMG this is amazing footage. You should be so proud.
Also, I learned about Palmyra while reading about an insane murder case that started on Palmyra. The book is called The Sea Will Tell and it’s about a couple visiting Palmyra who unfortunately encountered another younger couple—the man was running from the law and his girlfriend was very devoted. I won’t spoil the end but you can probably guess. The details are bizarre and fascinating but the description of Palmyra, despite the gruesome things that happened there, makes me desperately want to go! Or at least to see it, so thank you!

Se habla de una raza que le pidió a los Dioses que hundieran su tierra en las profundidades del mar para poner fin a una guerra, cierta tierra que ya no existe se dice que está en las profundidades del océano cerca de esa zona del planeta.

Is it true that this atoll is considered to be legally part of the US proper, making it and Washington DC the only non-state locations to hold that status?
