Talking About Detent Balls (How do they work?)

In this video I go over the basics with detent balls, how they work, and different ways they can be implemented. I am not a knife maker or and engineer, but I have done research and have learned a few things through various mods I have attempted on my knives over the years.

Speaking of haveing the ball flat to give that pop or snap. My Marsh has a detent rod! Its not a ball at all, its a rod and the end is totally flat and almost sharp if you know what I mean. Its a flipper so its really nice when the detent snaps. It flys open. Great vid C.

It is fixed and not spinning. However, Jake Hoback has in fact invented a rolling detent ball to reduce drag when opening the knife. It's a custom add on though.

is there a way to lessen the detent if the ball is sitting all the way inside the hole? can I remove a micro amount of material around the edge of the hole so that it rolls out easier? (so that it doesn't have to abruptly overcome a 90 degree angle, id just bevel the edge a tiny bit. ) It's a liner lock flipper and the tension from the lock bar is fine and pivot isn't too tight, etc.-- Thanks!

thank you, i always thought detent balls spun was wonding if anything was wrong with my knife when i noticed the detent ball on my knife had a flat. thanks.

Just received my 0562 & has already been sent to ZT for warranty work. I got one w/the super DETENT. Any slight pressure on the lock bar & there is no way to flip it. But as noted, the fit & finish is great & all the other technical bits except for the detent.

Good vid. Man talk about balls, holes and the balls fitting in the holes, we talking dirty here,
Anyway why can't they make an adjustable detent, Just put threads on the portion that holds the ball, and instead of ball use an allen screw, round off the head, use Loctite and just adjust it to your likiing.
Kind of like make sure the head in the screw fits the hole just the way you like it,
