“II Canto degli Italiani" or “The Song of Italians” is the national anthem of Italy. It is best known among Italians as the "Inno di Mameli" after the author of the lyrics or "Fratelli d’Italia” from its opening line.

The national anthem was performed by nine-year-old Eleonora Benetti wearing the Italian tricolour and the Italy choir, joining in for the much more rapid refrain.

From TORINO 2006 Winter Olympic Games Opening Ceremony on February 10th, 2006 at Stadio Olympico in Turin, Italy.

Thank you to the ZDF commentator for not talking over the first verse, unlike the RAI commentator!!!

I'm not even Italian, and even I think this is a beautiful cover of the nation's anthem. Love the passion the Italians put into the anthem at Torino 2006 as well!

Così diviso, così controverso, un solo canto, un solo popolo una sola lacrima d'amore

I enjoy this version most of all the videos of young girls/ladies singing this anthem because she still has a prepubecent sound to her voice compared to someone like Jackie Ivancho who sounded older and like an MP4, or professionally trained. This sounds like a schoolgirl who won the contest or someone's grand daughter which gives this anthem the perfect amateur/stage fright sound which sounds almost heartbreaking like a child singing to an ailing or deceased family member. Great.

Fratelli d'Italia,
l'Italia s'è desta,
dell'elmo di Scipio
s'è cinta la testa.
Dov'è la Vittoria?
Le porga la chioma,
ché schiava di Roma
Iddio la creò

Fratelli d'Italia,
l'Italia s'è desta,
dell'elmo di Scipio
s'è cinta la testa.
Dov'è la Vittoria?
Le porga la chioma,
ché schiava di Roma
Iddio la creò

Stringiamci a coorte,
siam pronti alla morte.
Siam pronti alla morte,
l'Italia chiamò.
Stringiamci a coorte,
siam pronti alla morte.
Siam pronti alla morte,
l'Italia chiamò!

English Translation:

Brothers of Italy,
Italy has woken,
bound Scipio's helmet
Upon her head.
Where is Victory?
Let her bow down,
Because [as a] slave of Rome
God created her

Italy has woken,
bound Scipio's helmet
Upon her head.
Where is Victory?
Let her bow down,
Because [as a] slave of Rome

Let us join in a cohort,
we are ready to die.
We are ready to die,
Italy has called.
Let us join in a cohort,
We are ready to die.
We are ready to die,
Italy has called! Yes!

Ahhhh childhood! I remember it like yesterday. Freezing cold winter night, finishing up dinner and my parents are talking about the Winter Olympics. I had no idea what that meant but we all rushed to the TV room, turned on the little 32 inch and BOOM. Caught this anthem live!

Absolutely mesmerizing, especially since I was a kid too in 2006. I'll always have this warm memory with me! Fraaaateeeelliiii
