We just bought our XC 40 similar to the one he was driving. We love it. Has a lot of power like he mentioned. Very high tech with all kinds of safety features. Ours is red with white interior.

I really like the XC40 and used to look at buying one but get disappointed every year that they kept that stupid thumb hurting steering wheel design. The steering wheel on the XC60 is excellent in comparison with full leather cover over the metal/plastic frame but on the XC40 Volvo had to make another kind of steering wheel with a tiny bit of leather over the (very) sharp frame where the palm side of your thumbs naturally rests. Personally it's a deal breaker, I notice it the instant I grab the steering wheel.

Maybe my hands are just wrong :(

Compared to BMW X1? The XC 40 is about $5K-$15K more expensive comparably equipped. The XC40 is a bit smaller, but poorer gas mileage, bit slower, bit less nimble in steering, bit less comfortable. I think the question is whether the difference in frills are worth the extra dough. Because the basics aren’t much different.

I had to drive this XC40 as a rental for 1000 miles. It’s a piece of crap for a number of reasons. In addition to poor fuel mileage and range, the cruise control sucks, as does the digital instrument cluster. The engine and transmission are clunky. I bet it falls apart before 80k miles. And I hate it when they place the fuel door on the wrong side.
