A lot of people think having muscle mass = strength but that’s only partially true, it’s actually muscle mass + motor unit recruitment = strength. Motor unit recruitment is how many muscle fibers you can get to activate during a contraction. The more muscle fibers activate the more strength you generate. Not many motor units actually activate during most contractions you do during your day due to how it could tear your muscles apart if 100% of them kept activating for all contractions you do. Which is why motor unit recruitment only increases during fight or flight situations; that’s why mothers can lift cars up if their kids are for some reason stuck underneath one. You can train though in order to increase your motor unit recruitment by doing more body weight exercises or calisthenics, which is why people who do primarily calisthenics are so strong and lean yet so skinny.
