Martin 00028 Standard and Modern Deluxe | Comparison @ The Fellowship of Acoustics

With the recent introduction of the Modern Deluxe series from Martin we thought it was time for a quick comparison of the Standard and Modern Deluxe 000-28 models. We dragged Adrian into the recording studio to play a tune on both guitars!

Nice Demo. The MD has greater clarity, fullness, richness, resonance and sustain. I do have to disclose that I have the 000-42 Modern Deluxe and am madly in love with it for all the features I just listed for this 000-28 MD. I played the Modern Deluxe and a 000-42 standard back-to-back before purchasing the MD. First of all, the MD was the lightest weight OOO/OM- style guitar I have ever played. Amazingly light. In my demo I played the Standard first, and it sounded wonderful. Next I played the MD, and it absolutely blew me away. It took a sum total of 15 seconds to make my decision to buy the MD. It was THAT great! It was also SO much easier action for my arthritic fingers. It felt like the action of a high end Taylor with THAT MARTIN SOUND! 😍

I just came back from a local music store with the Modern Deluxe. It was no contest when I played three together. I bought the only one in the store and feel so very lucky for having it. It's the best sounding guitar (000) I've ever played. I played a reimagined 000-28, an Eric Clapton 000-28, and the MD. The first two didn't sound remotely as good as the MD. I've played pre war Martin guitars off and on all my life. Martin's VTS technique is magic. I don't think I could pick between the MD and a pre war guitar blindfolded. It sounds that goods. Keep in mind, though, that this is the only 000-28 MD I've ever played and we all know there can be a significant difference between guitars of the same model. I'll be sleeping on the couch for a couple months, but I'll snuggle up close to the

Standard for me! I had a chance to play them both side-by-side, and the modern deluxe sounded “dead” and muffled to me. The OM-28 standard was also nice, but I liked the feel of the OOO-28 and that’s the guitar I went home with. I couldn’t be happier!

Those necks on the modern delux series are some tight real-estate. The string spaceing on the md oo 28 is so tight, it seems like its better suited for flatpicking and thereup is hardly no break angle at the saddle. I am not a fan of the diamond volute on the back of the lower head stocks of most martins. It just gets in the way, and makes it more difficult for a stirrup style capo to find a home there.

Thanks for the video. I have been hunting for a new Martin and did a side by side comparison of a OOO-28 standard and OOO-28 MD as well as an OM-28 standard. The modern deluxe seemed “dead” and muffled to me. I was a little torn between the OM 28 and the OOO-28 standards, but ended up liking the feel of the OOO-28 Standard that’s the one I went home with. I couldn’t be happier. I’m sure some of it depends on the individual guitar. But to me, the modern deluxe didn’t compare to the other two.

I love the silk sounding in the MD series, beside its lower projection (due to a more balanced sound, especially in the mids/highs)

I like the 000-28 standard better. The MD is too bright. Standard has better tonal palette the colours and flavors and quality sustain of each note blends together very well. Standard from the bass to mids to trebles equally and even.

This would be very hard to pic in a blind test, or an ABX test. Pretty much the same.

I think the standard sounds more complex and smokey, while the modern deluxe has very clear and strong trebles, and probably cuts better.

Why do you guys on this Channel look so much like and play so well like certain famous musicians? This one looks like Mark King -- Level 42. There's another guy here that looks like Dominic Miller. How about the guy with beard and long hair? Is he from Kansas or the Allman Brothers? You guys are stunt doubles with very fine musical ability.
