OSPREY KESTREL 58 BACKPACK REVIEW

The best packs for hiking and trekking are the ones that fit with your contours like a glove and seem to integrate with you rather than hang off you. Our testers had just that with the Kestrel 58 by Osprey.

The Kestrel and women’s-specific Kyte series have become of Osprey’s most popular models for hiking and this latest iteration, though not radically different, still builds on that legacy well.

Available in a range of different capacities from 36-litre to 68, there’s a model to fit any type of multi-day adventure, from weekend micro adventures beyond the city’s boundaries to full-blown expeditions in the Yukon. This one we’ve been testing, the Kestrel 58, is the kind of size we’d want for hiking a long-distance trail with – say, the Pennine Way, or even the Pacific Crest Trail/

The Osprey Kestrel 58 Pack was selected for our Outdoor 100 2019/20.

The Outdoor 100 is our guide to the latest and greatest outdoor gear, with everything from three-layer jackets to four season tents, and ultra-distance trail shoes through to mountaineering boots. All the kit is tested by our staff and also the Outdoors Magic Test Team, a group of enthusiasts including Himalayan climbers, record-breaking kayakers and Arctic explorers.

This video has better lighting and production quality than most blockbuster films.

Love the production quality of your videos. What I also like of how you summarize a product in a few words.

I own this backpack and was very excited when I received it because it is made of high quality materials, but 2 weeks ago, went for a weekend hiking trip and its performance was not what I expected. I was carrying more than 10kg weight inside of it and unfortunately the fit on my back and on my waist was not good, so keep that in mind.

Amazing review and amazing video. How do you compare this to the Aether? They seem quite similar though.

Top review! Bought myself the 68L version, so you have that extra space and when half filled you use the compresion straps and it doesn’t look saggy and to big. My top reason to buy this was the front loading panel, and as en extra the versatile use of it because of extra mesh/pockets.
I had doubt between this one and the Gregory Zulu, and my girlfriend picked that one (Jade version) and the Osprey felt more premium/better quality on the zippers and plastic straps. Also fabric felt higher quality, as it is the same 210D en 630D nylon strenght.

Hello my friend and a great review... what size is this backpack and if you can tell us your height.. 😊✌️

How much bigger does this bag feel compared to the 48 lt version if you had them side by side? Does the compression straps work well to make the bag smaller when it's not filled fully? I can fit in a 48 lt for sure but I would like to have the extra space of 58 if I need to. So if they feel similarly sized, especially when you compress it down, that would be really nice. I am a quite small guy so don't wanna carry around a very big bag all the time.

I received the kestrel 58 today. Great bag, perfect size and quality but there is no flapjacket included as you've stated. There might have been a confusion there maybe? Just wanted to inform you.

I have the old menstrual 68 the 2 side and front mesh pockets saved and bottles would fall out of side pockets and same with front pocket so unless theirs something to tighten pockets with keep away, a comfortable pack tho

I’m seriously considering getting one. My only problem is the two straps below, meant I presume to carry a sleeping bag, seem to me very thin. Could you please tell me if a 6.6lbs tent (15” long, 7” wide) fits in the loops? It looks like the loops, even when completely widened, are very narrow.
Thanks a lot

Would you recommend this pack for a multi-day camping trip in the Lake District?

Is the KESTREL 58 sold in the USA? I didn't see it on the Osprey web site.

Great review, thank you! Pack seems great. Got one question: I am a bit concerned about the longevity of the U-zip opening on the front panel. Any experience with it? Does the osprey guaranty also cover the zippers? Thanks.

Great review. Does this definitely have the alternative flapjacket top closure? Doesn't seem to be listed as a feature in the official ads! Such a handy feature if so

Sorry if I'm being overly cynical but this seemed to me less of a review and more Osprey paying some professional filmmakers to take one of their bags out somewhere pretty...
