THE GREAT SNORKEL DEBATE! | 'De-restricting' a Yamaha R7 (and more Dyno charts!)

This keeps popping up over and over again online "Remove your snorkel and you'll make all the power in the world" "You won't be able to keep your front wheel on the ground" "Make sure you re-tune the bike because you'll get so much more air"

We've given you the results from a LAMS R7, now finally we can give you the results from a 689cc R7. Unsurprisingly they're about the same, remove the snorkel and you'll drop a bit of top end power, but gain some in the middle. Replace it with the DNA filter and lid and you still won't gain anything up top, but you'll get a bit more in the middle.

I spoke to a local shop about flashing my R7 and he said the exact same thing about the after-market stage 2 filter. nothing really to gain by it except that it is easier to clean out and reuse vs stock filter being more tedious to clean. thanks for the confirmation and work you put into testing out the difference between the two.

Great video, I have 2021 XSR 700 UK model and have the snorkel with the tube going right down into the air Filter. I bought a complete spare airbox to cut the offending tube into the air Filter off flush with the airbox lid, but from what you are saying from your tests, I would do better to take the spare lid and open the inlet aperture out to just smaller than the opening in the standard air filter to get a healthy dollop of extra power in the middle of the reve range. I have already fitted a Leo Vince exhaust system so imagine a flashed ECU to suit exhaust and intake mods would benefit any possible lean condition

I removed just the snorkel and it seems to make a difference from 4 k rpm up, also seemed to rev "free'r" over 8 k rpm. No other mods currently on 2022 60th Anniversary Edition in USA.

you also have habe a duel snokle in the front f the air box should change them over to, the throttle don't fully throttle ether so need to sand a little down to boost the extra power

you REALLY needed to look at the fuelling in the same context.. by improving the "flow" with fewer restrictions, & to see increases in power (torque) at lower rpm where the physics suggests should make lesser improvements than at the top where less restrictive higher flow logically will return better gains.. strongly suggests a weak lean fueling.. then theres steady state flow potential vs induction pulses.. as well as the effects of the area around the inlet to the box.. dont under estimate effects of turbulences once the bikes moving at speed.. have you yried the trumpet 180deg the other direction as an example.. just to see.. but a/f ratio NEEDS to be looked at before ANY conclusions can be made

i have moded my snorkal bna have it going into the air filter i have mine about two inches out with a trumpit on, i have been resurching on line and found a air box engineer who trained with race cars all his life. he has a xsr700 and dna filter but did not buy the dna top as he says the sound waves dont work as good as a trumpet funnel.. he whent into great detail about it. i made my own before seeing his post. i am going on the dino next week . we will see if he is right or not. i am not botherd about hp i want more torque up to about 8000 rpms as i have a T7.

So instead of buying a new lid for that larger opening, what if I just use a dremel and make a larger opening on my OEM lid? Thoughts if this will work?

Can you do a video on de restricting the inlet to the airbox

Did you test the roll off roll on affect, often the snorkel is designed to improve the power delivery when riding in real world conditions as opposed to straight power runs.

Hi man do you have a syringe damper on your yamaha r7 and if you do what kind and how do you install it do you have a videowith you install it

So do you recomend removing the snorkle or no? I've got a new CF moto 450ss and it has a VERY similar snorkle. I just installed a DNA filter on it and im trying to decide if I should keep the snorkle or get rid of it.

Does the HO have a less restricted snorkel than the LAMS model?
