Islam Makachev has had a dominant run in the UFC all the way to becoming champion, with 11straight wins and 7 finishes over top competition.
But his fist title defense was anything but easy.
Islam was not able to dominate Alexander Volkanovski or even pose a serious submission threat despite having Volk’s back twice in the fight.
And out of Islam’s 9 takedown attempts, Volkanovski defended 5 of them.
Islam did however show off his impressive striking against a seasoned striker in Volkanovski, which arguably won him the fight.

Volkanovoski is better than every lighweight except Islam . So i don't think that anyone can defeat islam . There are some fighters in WW who can give him a tough fight but Islam is unbeatable in lw

Highly disagree. Volk is an absolute animal and shows it time and time again. Don't downplay either of them by claiming they were beatable because that only applies to eachother. Anyone else in lw or featherweight would get mauled by either volk or islam (really doesn't matter who, they will both end whoever is in front of them) the only 1 that May be a threat is beneil but we first have to see if he can beat Charles convincingly.

Honestly tho, there’s only like a couple that could beat him at light weight, like Dustin, baniel, and Rafael. But this are all slim chances, and what volk did is nothing less than a miracle and true performance of combat

Or alternatively, you could say that Islam is gonna be very hard to beat. This is because Volk had a lot of things go his way a 284, yet he still couldn't get the win, so it will be hard for other contenders to match his performance against Islam

Why Volk did well in the fight:
Number 1 pfp fighter in the world
Has fought at higher weight classes before
22 fight win streak and had never lost in the ufc
Came off the best win in his career and was as popular as he'd ever been
He's short, powerful and has no neck
Strong cardio and a lot of heart
Solid chin
Had the fight in his own country so had large support
Crowd were vociferously cheering every strike thrown by Volk even if it didn't land
Had a very strong camp
Excellent coaching team
Was training for Islam for when he was back-up at 280
The recovery time in between weigh-ins and the fight was about 11 hours shorter than usual
Had nothing to lose in the fight as pressure was on Islam in his first defence
Khabib was not in Islam's corner

So he had all this going for him yet Islam still got the decision. This just shows how much it will take to actually beat islam. So for contenders like gaethje, poirier, dariush etc, they won't be in a similar situation so you can't really say that because Islam only just won the decision, these other fighters have a strong chance. You need to look at context as styles make fights.
