You might think you know a lot about Canada—especially if you happen to live in North America. But in truth, it’s surprising how little most of us know about Canadian history. Even though Canada is just across the border from the United States, Canada tends to get unfairly overshadowed. Nevertheless, Canada’s history is a vibrant one.

It took a little bit more than the Royal Navy to defeat Louisbourg. They fielded a large army and sent it against the fortress. The navy provided important support during the siege. This was the second fall of Louisbourg.

How do you jump from 1840 to WW1 and ignore Confederation in 1867? Kinda ridiculous

It is a bit oversimplified. The British did try to assimilate French Canadians by banning their language and religion at first but there were so many uprisings that they finally gave up. However, during the next few years, British Canadians isolated French Canadians. They excluded them from politics, economics, and culture as a bid to try to force them to assimilate by renouncing their french identity. Even after the Act of Union, there was a clear divide between Canadians of British origins and Canadians of French origins. This was exacerbated with the immigration of the Irish and Scottish in the 1800s. French Canadians were also considered second-class citizens; since they we're excluded from society, most we're poor and did not have the same opportunities as British Canadians. This mostly changed in the 20th century with policy reforms, protests, and acts of violence. Some French Canadians, mostly Quebecers, still feel a lot of resentment towards Canadians of British origins and the UK because of this. This is why many Quebecers call for the independence of province of Quebec, since many do not consider themselves Canadians because of their culture, language, history, and the "oppression" (I use this very loosely) of the British and British Canadians.

And let's not get started on the injustices and horrors the First Nations people had to go through!

The Great Peace of Montreal (1701) was not signed by the British. It was between the French and its indigenous allies.

THANK YOU for this dense and informative video about the history of Canada. As a teacher, may I give some feedback?
PROS: The narrator spoke clearly and earnestly, which helps hold interest. The video is generally quite professional with plenty of visual movement despite relying almost entirely on still images. This also holds interest.
CONS: While the images were generally well-selected, many were inappropriate to the narrative. For example, to illustrate immigrants moving to Canada, a drawing was cropped where one can clearly see a corner of the Statue of Liberty near New York City. I suppose, however, immigrants may have landed at Ellis Island and moved on to Canada afterwards. Or, while describing the transition in the economy from furs as the main export to timber, there are some images that are clearly referencing the Boston Tea Party.
The overview is long enough to provide some details (I am still surprised at how many 5-minute history videos are out there. What on earth can one learn from 5 minutes?) However, a number of key events were not even mentioned, in particular, the Confederation in 1867, and the construction of the trans-Canada Pacific Railway in the 1880s. It might also be worthy to mention Canada's outsized contribution to the sport of hockey and winter sports in general.

I have been living in Canada for almost 2 years with my family. I came from Europe. This is my second immigration. I want to say that despite the consequences of Covid, the numerous wars in the world, I can say that Canada is the best country to live in. Before Canada, I was in many European countries, which, according to all ratings, are considered the best for living, but in my opinion, Canada is the most comfortable country for living! God bless Canada!

After the American revolutionary War where the colonists won their independence, the British were adamant in treating French colonists and first nations with the same rights and liberties as the newly formed United States, to prevent another revolution in Canada. Canada was given more autonomy from the British monarchy since there would be a probability of the French colonists seeking an alliance with the united states in a future revolutionary war.
