A natural gas pipeline east of Houston exploded Monday, setting houses around it on fire. The pipeline owner, Dallas-based Energy Transfer, says a 20-inch main carrying natural gas liquids ignited, triggering mandatory evacuations for about 1,000 homes and businesses while others were told to shelter in place.

Each weekday morning, "CBS Mornings" co-hosts Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil and Nate Burleson bring you the latest breaking news, smart conversation and in-depth feature reporting. "CBS Mornings" airs weekdays at 7 a.m. on CBS and stream it at 8 a.m. ET on the CBS News app.

They put those four foot concrete posts in front of store entrances and many other types of buildings. You’d think they’d have them for a 20” liquid gas pipeline!

So the driver accidentally drove thru a fence and accidentally continued across the field and ran into the pipeline in the middle of an open field by accident. Im happy we cleared that up.

I live 2 miles down the road and it’s horrible, keeping my prayers to the families without homes and the people working hard to keep the fire from spreading.

Do we not have concrete barriers around such pipelines that breach the surface?

That is not a suburb. That is an area zoned for commercial industry.

That happened in the state I live in years ago. The damage to the surrounding area was insane.

The entire State of Texas froze solid in 2021. And now it turns out that all the residents of Houston had to do to get warm was to drive a truck into an unprotected gas main that nobody knew how to turn off. I pray to God that Greg Abbott is NOT getting any ideas from this...

Mostly peaceful gas pipeline explosion...except for the explosion.

Laporte, Texas is NOT a suburb of Houston. One would think that CBS would have someone on top of parsing through the information.

I realize this may seem like a naive question, but is it not possible for them to simply turn it off? Is there not an emergency shutoff valve available?

"They are monitoring air quality here, and so far things are normal." THINGS?? What 'THINGS'?

A figment of your imagination. Definitely intensional.

That’s why you don’t live in urban/suburban environments. Texas has so much rural land. No need to pack yourselves in like sardines.

It's just a raging pipeline fire. Totally "normal." Nothing to see here, move on.

That's ghastly. I can't even stand the smell of a neighbor's woodpile burning and I have acres around my farmhouse here in Cajun Country.
