Wow! Some great recommendations! Just downloaded the ebook "Incandescence" after watching your video. It sounds like my cup of tea! Thank you for sharing your video, and regards from across the pond!

One underrated thing I love about this channel is how it's never more than like 15 seconds till the meat of the video starts. You just let it rip. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that (on top of the good recs)

Okay... You alerted me to a Egan book I have not read yet so it got an immediate buy!

Great recommendations! I enjoyed The Fifth Season and as a Murakami fan, I would say 1Q84 is his magnum opus. Rendezvous with Rama is in my TBR. I haven't explored the other two authors yet but Project Hail Mary sounds like a blast.

I really enjoyed Hail Mary. Bought it a year or more ago and read it a few months back on a transatlantic flight which was what id saved it for. In retrospect the books structure and story is quite similar to The Martian so if you liked that you'd probably like this plus its got an element of mystery where parts of the story are slowly revealed which adds to it

Project Hail Mary got me interested in reading more sci-fi books too. I dnf 3 or 4 different sci-fi books before it. It's a really great book!

Out of these, i read Rama 30 years ago (one of my 1st sci-fi reads, now deserving a re-read), and Project Hail Mary 3 months ago.
Project Hail Mary is very very good, in my top 5 of last year.
In my 60 book TBR for 2023 i already have 1Q84 (probably for Summer) and Fifth Season (around late Fall).
I liked you tease on Incandescence, so i moved it up on my global TBR list. Might make it for 2024, lets see how it goes!

Incandescence sounds amazing. Permutation City would probably be a top 5 book for me.

I do have to read Incandescence. You sold it well.

Rama deserves a reread. All I remember now is that I liked it as a teen.

Project Hail Mary was excellent. Rendezvous w Rama was also a mysterious classic. Might be my favorite Clarke book
Greg Egan is someone I have yet to venture in. But I'm gonna have to fit him in. There isn't enough time for all the books I want to read lol😅

I read 1Q84 last year and it's become mh favorite of Murakami's, which is saying a lot as I've read over a dozen. Rendezvous with Rama is on the physical TBR so hoping to get to that one soon!

Going to have to check out Incandescence. I have The Best of Greg Egan and am really enjoying it.

Great video! Loved the Fifth Season - I finished it before the pandemic started and I'm STILL thinking about it and the characters. I need to add IQ84 to my list...

Ok, you got me with 'jelly babies' for Incandesce. I also like your recommendations because you don't suffer the recency bias that inhibits recommending 'Golden Age' authors such as Arthur C. Clarke. A great book - also, in that class, Larry Niven's Ringworld, and Frederick Pohl's Heechee Saga trilogy. I loved JK Jemison's Broken Earth trilogy, so will definitely add IQ84 to my 2023 wish list. Great video.

I really need to read some Greg Egan. You're the third Booktuber I've seen recommending a different Egan book, and every one of them sounds awesome.

1Q84 is on my kindle, so it will be the next of these I read. I enjoyed the half dozen (or so) of Murakami's other books I've read.
(I like how you included his name in Japanese in the description box! Had to use google translate to puzzle it out.)

Project Hail Mary shocked me. After really LOVING The Martian so much I bought it the day it came out and couldn't believe it was the same author. I found it juvenile, contrived, and ridiculous. I respect that many people enjoyed it but I bailed halfway through and donated it to my local library. I had a similar experience with Artemis. I hope his fans continue to enjoy his output for many years to come but for me Weir is very likely a one-hit wonder.

Wow I'm tempted to give Greg Egan another shot after your review. Might just skip over the math and physics parts. Read Rendezvous with Rama long ago and loved it along with its trilogy sequel written by another writer whose name can't recall. I bought 1Q84 but discarded it before reading cause it just seemed too long. I'm reading another Japans writer now Sayaka Murata who isn't straight sf but who is very funny and weird. Project Hail Mary was as good as The Martian though a little too long. The revelation about the narrator in the second half of the book almost blew my mind!
