In his inaugural defense of the WBC World Welterweight Title, Shawn Porter secured a narrow split-decision victory against the resilient Yordenis Ugas in a captivating 147-pound showdown on Saturday night, broadcasted on FOX.

The charismatic "Showtime" Shawn Porter, despite being a few strands of hair lighter, showcased his championship flair with a megawatt smile. He delivered a pre-fight reminder to his formidable challenger, Yordenis Ugas, a Cuban expatriate contending for a world title for the first time, that the outcome would be "and still," boldly emblazoned in yellow on Porter's gum shield.

True to the prophetic message, after 12 intense rounds at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, Porter retained his title through a closely contested split decision. The judges' scores were Max DeLuca 115-113 for Porter, Zachary Young 117-111 for Ugas, and Steve Morrow 116-112 for the champion.

Reflecting on the bout, Porter acknowledged the crowd's anticipation for a brawl but emphasized that the strategic approach led to a close fight. Despite having to trim his braids during the weigh-in to make the 147-pound limit, Porter affirmed that the weight cut had no impact on his performance. Remaining on his toes throughout the fight, he maintained focus and responsiveness to his corner's guidance.

The opening round saw Porter's characteristic footwork as he engaged Ugas with effective rights and lefts to the body. Ugas, preferring to stay on the outside and utilize his jab, closed the round with a right to the body. The second round witnessed Ugas adopting a more aggressive stance, yet Porter's faster hands prevailed.

As the rounds unfolded, Ugas continued to stalk Porter, working the ribcage and measuring with his jab, while Porter showcased his inside-fighting skills. Ugas had a strong fourth round, landing body shots and countering with rights to the jaw. Despite effective blows from Ugas, Porter's work rate in the middle rounds outpaced the challenger.

In the tenth, Ugas intensified, landing left hooks that opened a cut near Porter's right eye. The champion, however, remained active, making the rounds challenging to score. The 11th showcased Porter's endurance, but Ugas increased his activity, closing the gap and working combinations. Porter's left jab caught Ugas flush, potentially securing the round.

The 12th round saw Ugas taking control, landing power shots on a less active Porter. Despite Ugas's strong finish, Porter successfully defended his belt in a tough contest, declaring, "We fought a good smart fight tonight."

In the aftermath, Ugas expressed belief in being unjustly robbed and asserted his readiness to face top names in the welterweight division, emphasizing his belonging among elite fighters in the weight class.

Porter is not a great fighter, but he's more than enough for any fighter, put a fighter in there with Shawn Porter and he's going to the edge of defeat 😊.

The boxer trying to show they're not hurt is always the one losing the fight.
