A portrait of one of Australia’s most celebrated and important voices.

Celebrated by audiences at home and abroad, indigenous artist Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu was one of the most important and acclaimed voices to ever come out of Australia. Blind from birth, he found purpose and meaning through songs and music inspired by his community and country on Elcho Island in far North East Arnhem Land. Living a traditional Yolngu life, his breakthrough album ‘Gurrumul’ brought him to a crossroads as audiences and artists around the world began to embrace his music.

#Gurrumul is a portrait of an artist on the brink of global reverence, and the struggles he and those closest to him faced in balancing that which mattered most to him and keeping the show on the road.

I had the most wonderful pleasure of watching this movie yesterday with my mum.
Mum was a music teacher so the musical aspects of the movie stirred her deeply.
Mum also visited me on a few of the stations where I worked around Australia.
On every station there always a strong aboriginal presence. As well as working on the stations there were many traditional and ceremonial influences that permeated through our station communities. As a result we were able to bear witness to some truly wonderful cultural events. This also affected mum deeply.
For my part and beyond the station boundary fence I was able to learn a lot about country. About the meaning of sprit and place, tradition. The western influences, good and bad and the hardships followed the latter. I saw a lot of good people broken through no fault of their own and I witnessed true magic and undeniable spirit. I learnt to love this country of ours a lot more through their eyes than I ever did through a book, a classroom, a flag or a cow.
This movie is magical.
This story is magical.
Gurrumul is magical.
I had to take mum for a drink afterwards, she was still shaking and crying twenty minutes after the movie ended.
I implore you to see it.

This needs to be shown in all major cinemas - not just your niche boutique ones.

One of the best films I have ever seen. So engaging and emotional. Probably one of the most important Australian films too. Our nation needs to see this.
