I ask Polish people and a Mexican guy on the streets of Krakow and Warsaw if they think Polish people are unfriendly. What is the difference between North American friendliness and Polish friendliness.

I used to have a housemate that was polish. In the beginning I was kinda afraid of him cause he always walked around with a resting B face. I thought this guy isn't friendly and doesn't have manners cause he doesn't smile when I greet him. But after some time I realize that's how polish people are. One time it was his birthday and he drank too much he kinda loosen up, was really friendly and invited me for coffee.

I’m American but in that aspect I’ve always felt like a foreigner in my own country because I’m the type of person if you ask me how I’m doing I’m going to give you a straight and honest answer and Americans don’t like that unless it’s something along the lines of “peachy”, ”wonderful”, ”amazing”, etc and you do it long enough you realize the inquiry is not genuine and frankly couldn’t care about my response. I know we get a rep for being “straightforward” but I’d argue most Americans aren’t in fact vast majority I’d say are very passive aggressive at least nowadays.

As a native New Yorker born n raised here my whole life, I’m sorry, but I agree with the rest of the world. I’m not gonna be smiling 24/7 greeting everyone that walks by me

Tf outta here😅

Smiling is good to do, it brings a good presence and you bring a positive mindset to other people. Have a wonderful day, Marina!

I know some of these people, they're part of the Couch Surfing and ex-pat community in Krakow. She's not just interviewing random people on the street, she must have contacted them first and asked them to to co-operate.

I’m not sure the friendliness is fake, but it can be used as a weapon to disarm you.

saying Dzień dobry is not normal in big cities, but if its a village then we do greet each other
but that's it, after greeting we just keep going to do our own things

it's cause in villages or small towns we know each other, at least from sight, we recognize that said person is a part of our small community

there is absolutely no reason to do so with cities when there are hundred thousands of people around
but we would say hi or nod our head if we spot someone from work in distance, as they belong to the same "community" as we

bothering total strangers for no reason at all is weird here, that's what Jehowa's Witnesses, or some weird sect people would do
